#2024Polls: No Military at polling stations; only standby support – GAF
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the deployment of troops to key locations nationwide to assist the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in maintaining peace and order during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In a statement, GAF reassured citizens that the troop movements are part of its collaborative effort with the police to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
Citizens were urged to remain calm and not be alarmed by the military presence in their communities.
“No military personnel would be stationed at any polling stations,” the statement clarified, noting that their role is strictly to provide standby support. The responsibility for election security, it stressed, remains primarily with the Police Service.
GAF further explained that military intervention would only occur if requested by the police to manage specific situations requiring reinforcement. “This collaborative approach ensures that the elections proceed smoothly and peacefully while maintaining law and order,” the statement emphasised.
The Armed Forces also appealed to Ghanaians to act responsibly, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid actions that could jeopardise the peace.
“GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the election process,” the statement added.
