Ablakwa denies Ghana gained financially from U.S. deportee agreement

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed claims that Ghana received financial or material benefits from its agreement with the United States of America to host some West African deportees.
Addressing the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, September 15, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that the arrangement was guided purely by humanitarian principles and not profit.
“Ghana has not received any money, compensation, or material gain from this understanding.
Our position is based solely on humanitarian considerations and principles,” he stated.
His clarification follows mounting public criticism and opposition concerns after reports surfaced that some Nigerian and Gambian nationals had been relocated to Ghana under the agreement.
Detractors accused the government of undermining national sovereignty in exchange for foreign benefits.
Mr. Ablakwa, however, assured the public that the arrangement was being implemented in line with international humanitarian standards, adding that the safety and dignity of Ghanaians remained paramount while the country fulfilled its obligations to the global community.
