Concerned resident appeals for urgent intervention to restore peace in Kwahu Abene
A concerned citizen of Kwahu Abene in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region, Mr. Kwasi Anim, has appealed to government authorities, security agencies and other key stakeholders to take immediate steps to restore lasting peace in the community, which has been gripped by a prolonged chieftaincy dispute.
Kwahu Abene has experienced heightened tension for more than a year following the destoolment of the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, by the Abene Kingmakers over alleged misconduct.
In his place, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III was subsequently enstooled as chief.
The dispute is currently before the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, where it is awaiting a final determination.
In an effort to contain the situation, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei-Awatey, ordered the closure of the Kwahu Abene Palace late last year.
Since then, the palace has remained under the protection of the Ghana Police Service.
However, tensions escalated further on Sunday, December 21, 2025, when the Kwahu Traditional Council issued a stern ultimatum to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, demanding the release of the palace to traditional authorities within three weeks.
The ultimatum expires today, January 14, 2026.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Anim called on the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs to deliver justice fairly and without bias, stressing that a transparent ruling is critical to restoring peace and stability in Kwahu Abene.
He also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to maintain, and even strengthen, the security presence in the town, rather than withdrawing personnel from the palace, until calm is fully restored.
Mr. Anim further urged President John Mahama, the IGP and other security agencies to intervene decisively to prevent any potential outbreak of violence and to ensure the protection of lives and property in the area.
He emphasised that sustained peace in Kwahu Abene can only be achieved through swift, impartial justice and proactive security measures.
