GMA assures of appropriate support to affected doctors amid Charles Amissah report
The Ghana Medical Association(GMA) has called for fairness, transparency, and due process following the release of a ministerial investigative report into the death of Charles Amissah.
In a statement addressed to its members and signed by its President, Ernest Yorke, the Association acknowledged the findings of the committee established by the Ministry of Health to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the GMA, the report identified major systemic weaknesses and longstanding gaps within Ghana’s emergency healthcare delivery system, including challenges related to referral pathways, staffing, equipment, and accountability mechanisms.
The Association said the findings reinforce the urgent need for sustained investment in emergency healthcare infrastructure and systems, rather than temporary or ad-hoc interventions.
The GMA also noted that the report recommended disciplinary action against some doctors believed to have played roles in the incident.
However, it expressed concern that the publication of the names of health workers involved has shifted public attention toward individual blame instead of the broader systemic issues highlighted in the report.
While reaffirming its support for accountability and high professional standards, the Association stressed that disciplinary processes must be evidence-based and conducted in accordance with due process.
The GMA disclosed that it would seek an official copy of the report for a comprehensive review to guide its next line of action.
It also assured members that it would provide appropriate support to any affected doctors facing disciplinary proceedings.
The Association further urged members to remain calm and avoid public commentary or speculation that could prejudice ongoing processes or damage the reputations of colleagues.
“The leadership will engage our affected colleagues, relevant authorities and keep members informed on developments,” the statement said.
The GMA reiterated its commitment to improving emergency healthcare delivery in Ghana while ensuring justice and fairness for healthcare professionals involved in the matter.
