Gborbu Wolumo has no conjugal intentions for Naa Okromo; it was just a rite – Chieftaincy Minister
Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Stephen Amoah Boateng has addressed concerns regarding the alleged child marriage ceremony purported to have occurred in Nungua over the past weekend.
Speaking on JoyNews' The Probe, Mr Asamoah Boateng clarified that the circulated video depicted a traditional rite rather than a marriage ceremony.
He explained that amidst the event, there were misconceptions, suggesting that 15-year-old Naa Okromo was being married off to 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII.
However, he stressed that discussions with the Nungua traditional authorities and the Ga priest involved revealed no intentions of initiating carnal relations with the young girl.
Mr Asamoah Boateng said his ministry collaborated with the Gender Ministry, the Attorney General's office, and the police to ensure the minor's safe removal from the Nungua Community.
“Through these discussions, it became evident that there were no intentions of carnal relations with the young girl,” he said on Sunday, 7 April 2024.
The ceremony sparked outrage and condemnation when it was first reported.
