Ghana has slipped three spots down in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking 61st globally with a score of 1.898, according to the latest report released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

Despite the drop, Ghana remains one of the more peaceful nations in West Africa, though the decline highlights growing security and stability challenges in the sub-region.

The Top 10 most peaceful countries were dominated by Europe, with Iceland retaining its long-standing position as the most peaceful nation, followed by Ireland and New Zealand, which climbed two places this year.

Austria, Switzerland, and Denmark, however, slipped slightly in the rankings.

Elsewhere, Sierra Leone rose two places to rank above Ghana at 59th, while Norway fell sharply by eight places.

In contrast, France made notable gains, climbing five places.

Analysts say the mixed shifts in the rankings underscore the global impact of regional conflicts, governance challenges, and economic pressures on peace and stability.

The GPI assesses 163 countries based on levels of societal safety, security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation.
