Gov’t to support large-scale poultry farmers in Dormaa – John Dumelo

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has assured poultry farmers in Dormaa of government support under the Feed Ghana project, particularly those with the capacity to produce at scale.
Speaking during a visit to several poultry farms in the area, Mr. Dumelo said farms with a production capacity of 200,000 to 250,000 birds will benefit from targeted assistance to help them maximise output.
He noted that many farmers in Dormaa already have incubators for producing day-old chicks, which, if fully harnessed, could significantly cut down the importation of chicks and strengthen the local poultry industry.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted the need for a comprehensive egg management strategy to prevent losses and ensure farmers reap full value from their production.
He further called on private institutions to partner with the government in advancing the goals of the Feed Ghana initiative.
During the engagement, poultry farmers raised concerns about high loan interest rates, which they said were crippling their businesses and leading to financial losses.
They appealed to the government to provide additional support, such as vaccination machines, logistics, and a ban on poultry imports to protect local producers.
Meanwhile, the Headmaster of Dormaa Senior High School disclosed that the school has already ventured into vegetable cultivation but lacks funding to expand.
With adequate support, he said the school hopes to add poultry and cashew production, leveraging its strong agricultural department to boost food production and student training.
