Ho GPRTU boils as former executives lock up office
A tense standoff has erupted at the Ho office of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Volta Region, where former executive members have reportedly locked the office, preventing newly elected officials from taking up their roles.
The dispute has intensified tensions within the union, marking the latest in a series of conflicts following last year’s elections.
The outgoing executives involved in the standoff include Michael Sonkro, former Vice Chairman, along with Pascal Awlidor, Raphael Lumor, Lucas Kofitu, and Felix Kpor.
These former leaders, who have challenged the election results, are said to have taken matters into their own hands by securing the office to block the transition of power.
Despite winning multiple court cases that upheld the election results, the newly elected officers remain locked out, unable to access the office to commence their duties.
Speaking to Class 91.3 FM, Dickson Dogbatse, the newly elected chairman for GPRTU’s Ho Branch 2, expressed frustration over the situation, stating that even though the national office conducted the election in 2022 and the court validated their win, the former officers have refused to step aside.
Currently, national GPRTU executives have travelled to the region to formally inaugurate the newly elected officers, but the locked office has stalled the process.
Efforts to mediate and resolve the impasse are reportedly underway, with calls from members for calm and a swift resolution to avoid disruptions in union operations.
The situation continues to unfold as union members await a resolution that will allow the newly elected officials to assume their roles and restore order at the Ho GPRTU office.
