LGBTQIA+: Serwaa Amihere apologises to PRESEC over “brewing ground” comment
TV personality and GHOne News presenter Serwaa Amihere has issued a public apology after describing Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC) as a “brewing ground for gays,” a comment that sparked widespread backlash.
The remark, which circulated on social media, drew strong condemnation from the PRESEC community and its authorities, who described the statement as inappropriate, misleading, and damaging to the school’s image and values. In a statement, PRESEC rejected the characterisation, stressing the school’s long-standing reputation for academic excellence, discipline, and moral training, and called for respect for the institution and its alumni.
Responding to the criticism, Serwaa Amihere explained that the comment was made jokingly during light-hearted banter with colleagues about second-cycle schools. She clarified that the exchange happened off-camera while she was live on her personal TikTok page, emphasising that it was not part of an official broadcast.
In the video shared on social media, she acknowledged the offence caused and took full responsibility for her words, despite insisting they were meant in jest.
She expressed remorse over the incident and assured the public that she has learnt from the experience and will be more mindful in future.
“We were making jokes about schools, and teasing schools. PRESEC came up, and we made some jokes, which upon reflection... a lot of people have been slighted by it. I take full responsibility for it and I would like to apologise to everyone who has felt slighted by the comments, especially the PRESEC community, and the PRESECANS. I apologise unreservedly, and I assure you that it won't happen again,” Serwaa Amihere said.
Ms Amihere was recently called to the bar after passing out at law school.
