Citizen wellbeing directly linked to national progress: Health Minister hails 2026 Budget as most health-centred in years
The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has hailed the 2026 national budget as the most people-focused and health-centred financial plan Ghana has produced in recent years.
According to him, the budget is fully aligned with President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, which places the health and wellbeing of citizens at the heart of national development.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, December 1, 2025, the minister stressed that no country could achieve sustained productivity or economic growth without prioritising its health system.
“The 2026 budget is the most people-focused and health-centered budget I have seen in recent years. And it aligns so well with the resetting agenda. And we all know we cannot have a productive country without paying attention to the health sector,” he said.
Mr Akandoh emphasised that the wellbeing of citizens was directly linked to national progress.
“It is well known that the health of the people in every nation is the wealth of the nation. So you cannot have a prosperous nation without a very strong health sector. And it is his excellency the president’s belief that provision of quality health care is a matter of right and not a privilege,” he stated.
He further underscored that investment in healthcare should be viewed as a catalyst for economic development rather than a financial burden.
“Across the globe, every dollar you invest in the health sector yields two or three-fold economic returns. The health sector is critical, and we see the expenditure not as a cost but as an investment,” he added.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery, expanding infrastructure, and ensuring equitable access to quality health services for all Ghanaians under the 2026 fiscal plan.
