FDA tightens checks on imported frozen foods amid food safety concerns
The Food and Drugs Authority has intensified regulatory checks on imported frozen chicken, meat, and fish following renewed concerns over food safety, including the recent ban on “chofi” in some parts of the country.
According to the Authority, the move forms part of stricter enforcement measures aimed at improving oversight of frozen food imports and protecting consumers from unsafe products.
The FDA said it has engaged importers on mandatory site verification procedures to ensure imported products come from hygienic, regulated, and certified facilities abroad.
The Authority explained that the inspections are intended to confirm compliance with international food safety standards, including production, storage, and handling conditions before shipment.
Officials say the measures are aimed at reducing public health risks linked to unsafe food consumption and strengthening monitoring across the frozen food supply chain.
The FDA added that it will continue working with importers and other stakeholders to ensure safe and quality frozen products are available on the Ghanaian market.
