The former Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, has been honoured with the Personality of Great Impact and Excellence Award by the Ghana Titans Awards.

The prestigious ceremony, which recently took place at the Accra International Conference Centre, recognized outstanding contributions to national development across various sectors.

Dr. Owusu-Danso, a distinguished plastic, aesthetic, and hand surgeon with over 35 years of experience, was celebrated for his exceptional leadership and transformative contributions to Ghana’s health sector during his more than five-year tenure as CEO of KATH.

Organized by The Business Executive Media Group in partnership with the Titans Awards Group, the event highlighted Dr. Owusu-Danso’s far-reaching impact, both locally and internationally.

He previously served as the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association and held the role of Secretary of the Commonwealth Medical Association for nine years.

“We are delighted to inform you that following a comprehensive and most credible nomination and assessment, you, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, have been identified as a Personality of Great Impact and Excellence,” read the citation accompanying the award.

During his stewardship at KATH, Dr. Owusu-Danso spearheaded more than 30 major projects and initiatives that elevated the hospital’s operations and services.

Notably, under his leadership, KATH became the first teaching and public hospital in Ghana to be accredited by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA), scoring an impressive 84%.

His tenure also saw the revival of long-stalled projects, including the redevelopment of the Maternity and Children’s Block, the construction of a state-of-the-art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and a modern Patient Relatives Hostel.

He also oversaw the installation of two ultramodern oxygen plants valued at GH₵5.4 million, making it the largest medical oxygen production capacity in any hospital in West Africa.

Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Owusu-Danso supported the establishment of an accredited COVID-19 testing center at KATH, making it the first hospital in the country to do so, and the third center nationally after Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research.

His visionary leadership also helped secure GH₵5 million in funding from Ghana Gas Company to expand the hospital’s psychiatry facility from 9 to 40 beds.

Additionally, he oversaw the completion of a 47-unit housing complex for junior doctors and led the hospital’s full digital transformation on August 1, 2020, streamlining clinical and financial operations and significantly reducing patient waiting times.

To enhance staff morale and capacity, Dr. Owusu-Danso reinstated the Annual Best Staff Awards, which had been suspended for four years.

He also facilitated staff training in customer care with support from Fidelity Bank and introduced free cancer screenings for staff, including breast, cervical, and prostate cancer.

Under his leadership, the hospital implemented new policies and operational protocols approved by the Board in 2021, further strengthening institutional governance and service delivery.

For his dedication, innovation, and indelible mark on healthcare in Ghana, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso has rightfully earned recognition as a national asset.

The Ghana Titans Awards’ honour serves as a fitting tribute to a career defined by excellence and impact.
