Ghana Red Cross pushes for 100-bed humanitarian hospital
The Ghana Red Cross Society has announced plans to establish a modern 100-bed humanitarian hospital to strengthen the country’s emergency healthcare delivery and disaster response system.
Speaking at the 2026 World Red Cross Day celebration, President of the Ghana Red Cross Society, Edward Donkor, said the proposed facility has become necessary following recent disasters and disease outbreaks that exposed significant gaps in Ghana’s healthcare preparedness and response capacity.
According to him, the hospital is expected to serve as a national centre for emergency response and epidemic preparedness, while providing specialised healthcare services to vulnerable people regardless of their financial status.
Mr. Donkor noted that the project forms part of the organisation’s broader humanitarian agenda aimed at improving healthcare access and strengthening resilience in communities across the country.
He highlighted some of the Ghana Red Cross Society’s ongoing interventions, including climate adaptation initiatives, disaster relief operations, and community-based healthcare programmes.
The Society is also appealing for increased government support, sustainable domestic funding, and the passage of a new Ghana Red Cross Act to strengthen its operations and enhance its ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
Mr. Donkor stressed that stronger collaboration between government, development partners, and humanitarian organisations would be crucial to improving healthcare delivery and disaster preparedness in Ghana.
