Greater Accra Regional Hospital condemns assault on nurse during emergency ward incident

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH) has expressed concern over a video circulating on social media showing an incident that occurred at its Emergency Department, where a nurse was assaulted by relatives of an accident victim.
According to a statement issued by the hospital’s management, the Emergency Department — one of the busiest in the country — was overwhelmed at the time of the incident as clinicians were attending to multiple critical cases.
Relatives and friends of the victims reportedly stormed the emergency triage, disrupting the delivery of care.
“Their overwhelming presence disrupted the smooth delivery of care, caused unnecessary tension, and even threatened the safety of our clinicians.
In the process, one of our dedicated nurses was assaulted,” the statement read.
The disturbance forced a temporary halt in service delivery until police officers were called in to restore order.
Hospital authorities described the attack as “unacceptable,” warning that aggression, interference, or assault against health workers not only disrupts healthcare delivery but also endangers lives.
Management further reminded the public that taking videos or photographs of patients and clinicians without consent breaches both privacy and hospital regulations.
“The safety and well-being of our staff and patients remain our top priority,” said Ms. Juliana Haruna, Head of Public Relations. “We encourage cooperation and mutual respect at all times to ensure a safe and supportive environment for quality healthcare.”
The hospital reassured the public of its commitment to providing timely and quality healthcare while urging patients and relatives to give clinicians the space and respect required to serve effectively.
