UTNMG demands fair treatment for unregistered students at Bolgatanga Nurses’ Training College
The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UTNMG) has raised an alarm over the unfair treatment of unregistered students at Bolgatanga Nurses’ Training College.
A total of 33 students, who only need to retake one or two papers, were not registered for the 2025/2026 NMC licensure exams due to a few failed courses.
Despite this, these students are being forced to pay high fees of GHS 1,700 per semester for feeding—even though they have not received any meals since the semester began—forcing them to arrange accommodation outside the campus at their own expense.
The fee structure has also been inconsistent.
Students were initially asked to pay GHS 2,088 for tuition plus GHS 1,740, totalling GHS 3,828.
After deducting the GHS 1,155 stay-back fee, the correct total should have been GHS 2,673.
However, the college has repeatedly changed the amount, now stating GHS 2,713 and most recently GHS 2,523.
UTNMG describes this as blatant financial exploitation.
In a statement signed by Agbeti Immortal, National President of UTNMG, the union called on the college to:
Allow students to write their resit exams without charging extra fees, including feeding.
Provide a clear breakdown of all fees and refund any excess payments.
Stop exploiting students financially. Launch a full investigation into the matter.
The union further urged the government to intervene immediately and direct the college to resolve the issue amicably, emphasising that the welfare of students is paramount.
UTNMG also appealed to parents, students, and stakeholders to join in demanding justice for the affected students.
