Asiedu Nketia accuses House of Chiefs President of partisan politics
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has criticised Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi, the President of the National House of Chiefs, for allegedly engaging in overt partisan politics, undermining the impartiality expected of his position.
During a community engagement in Konongo-Odumase, as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia accused the National House of Chiefs president of wearing New Patriotic Party (NPP) branded t-shirts and actively campaigning for the ruling party.
He expressed concern that the House Chiefs President, given his apparent support for the NPP, could not reasonably criticise the government or remain neutral on national issues.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia also criticised the National House of Chiefs president for his failure to address critical issues facing Ghana since assuming office, suggesting that his inaction had allowed the country to drift without proper guidance.
The NDC National Chairman further highlighted the lack of intervention by the National House of Chiefs on ongoing controversies within the country’s parliament, which he felt should have been addressed by the House.
The NDC chairman also raised concerns about the NPP’s influence over the National House of Chiefs elections, alleging that the ruling party had manipulated the process by offering bribes to ensure the election of a candidate favourable to their interests.
He pointed to the defeat of Togbe Afede XIV, who had opposed the payment of ex-gratia, suggesting that the NPP-backed candidate was chosen to ensure greater control over the House.
