EC clarifies delay in release of Ablekuma North results

Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, appeared before Parliament to provide clarity on the long-standing delay in declaring the parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Dr. Asare explained that the collation process was suspended due to discrepancies in some polling station results and incomplete pink sheets, which sparked disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He emphasised that, despite the setbacks, the Electoral Commission remains committed to upholding transparency and fairness. According to him, agents from both political parties and the media were present throughout the collation process, ensuring accountability and public confidence.
Dr. Asare also revealed that the Commission is seeking parliamentary support for police protection to enable EC officials to safely resume and complete the collation exercise.
The constituency has been without a Member of Parliament for over six months, a situation he described as deeply concerning.
He appealed for institutional backing to help resolve the impasse, reiterating that declaring the results remains a priority for the Commission.
Dismissing calls for an immediate re-run, Dr. Asare stated that a fresh election would only be considered as a last resort if all efforts to complete the collation fail.
He stressed that preserving and continuing the process is vital for the integrity of the democratic system.
"The EC believes that it is better to continue with the process than to discard everything altogether," he added.
