The Ninth Parliament of the Republic of Ghana will begin its third sitting tomorrow, with deliberations expected to centre on one of the most anticipated legislative proposals in recent years — the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, also known as LGBTQ+.

The landmark bill, which is now ready for formal presentation before the House, seeks to define, protect, and regulate human sexual rights while reinforcing traditional family values within Ghanaian society.

According to parliamentary sources, the proposed legislation aims to create a balanced legal framework that safeguards individual rights relating to sexuality, privacy, and dignity, while also promoting the preservation of family structures rooted in Ghana’s cultural and moral traditions.

The bill’s introduction has already generated significant national debate, with opinions divided across political, social, and religious lines.

Proponents argue that it represents a progressive step toward protecting human rights and fostering social harmony by clarifying the boundaries of sexual conduct and family obligations.

Supporters of the bill believe it will “strengthen community cohesion, reduce social conflicts, and uphold Ghana’s identity as a values-driven society.”

However, critics have urged caution, warning that the legislation must be crafted carefully to avoid infringing on personal freedoms and constitutional rights.

They have called for broad consultation with civil society, legal experts, and human rights advocates to ensure a fair balance between individual liberties and cultural norms.

As Parliament reconvenes, all eyes will be on the deliberations, which are expected to be spirited, far-reaching, and consequential for Ghana’s evolving discourse on rights, morality, and social values.
