Ghana’s Parliament is expected to witness an intense and high-stakes debate today as ten Members of Parliament take the floor to discuss the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025l, widely referred to as the LGBTQ+ Bill.

The Bill, which has sparked extensive national and international debate, seeks to regulate sexual rights and orientation-related conduct in Ghana, reinforcing what its sponsors describe as “traditional family and moral values.”

The motion for consideration is being led by Mr. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, and Mr. Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, who have been among the most vocal proponents of the Bill since its introduction.

The other Members scheduled to contribute to the debate include:

Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzra (MP for Ho West)

Mrs. Helen Adjoa Ntoso (MP for Krachi West)

Mr. Nurideen Muhammad Mummuni (MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga)

Mr. Vincent Ekow Assafuah (MP for Old Tafo)

Mr. Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana (MP for Gushegu)

Ms. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (MP for Dadekotopon)

Dr. Tiah Abdul Kabiru Mahama (MP for Walewale)

Mr. Anthony Mmieh (MP for Odotobri)

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 proposes to criminalise same-sex relationships, the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities, and advocacy for such rights.

Supporters of the Bill argue that it is necessary to preserve Ghana’s cultural and moral identity, while opponents—including human rights activists and some international observers—warn that it infringes on fundamental human rights and could harm Ghana’s global image.

Today’s debate is expected to draw significant public and media attention as Parliament deliberates on one of the most controversial pieces of legislation in recent history.
