The Bolgatanga East District Education Directorate has clarified the reasons behind its non-participation in the ongoing inter-district games and sports competition in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, following criticism from concerned parents, students, and teachers.

District Education Director George Asira, has firmly denied claims that he deliberately barred students from participating, describing such accusations as “deeply unfortunate” and attributing the decision solely to financial constraints rather than negligence or authoritarian leadership.

In a statement to reporter Moses Apiah, Mr. Asira outlined a timeline of events, revealing that preparations for the competition began during the second term of the 2024/2025 academic year with an initial contingent of 176 students.

However, limited funding quickly posed a major challenge.

“Despite our best efforts, including appeals to the District Assembly and our Member of Parliament, we managed to raise only GH¢2,500—GH¢2,000 from the Assembly and GH¢500 from our own office, which hasn’t received government subsidies since 2023,” Mr. Asira explained.

With rising costs for transportation, feeding, stipends, and logistics, the Directorate convened a meeting with key stakeholders—including the sports coordinator, coaches, and the district accountant—to reassess the situation.

The team was scaled down to 36 students across two disciplines, but the available funds still fell short.

“After a candid discussion, the committee unanimously agreed to withdraw from the competition to avoid embarrassment and logistical complications at the games village,” Mr. Asira said.

He emphasised that the decision was reached collectively and not taken unilaterally, noting that the financial limitations were real and well-documented.

He added that similar challenges were faced in 2023, during which GH¢2,300 was raised through community appeals, although part of that amount was legally reallocated (virement) to address other pressing needs due to delays in government funding.

While acknowledging the disappointment and frustration felt by many, Mr. Asira commended the district sports committee for its resilience and commitment.

He called on the public and media to advocate for greater community involvement and sustained investment in the district’s educational development.

“It is simply inaccurate and unfair to claim that I blocked the students,” Mr. Asira stressed.

“Our objective has always been to create opportunities for learners to explore and develop their talents, and we remain fully committed to that mission.”
