Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe vows to resist return of gov’t-appointed FA presidency, tenure extension
Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has vowed to resist any attempt to bring back the government-appointed FA presidency of old.
“I won’t allow anyone to tinker with the GFA statute after the sacrifices I made to ensure the position is based on merit through elections,” he told Graphic Sports.
Before his tenure began in 2004, the GFA office was occupied by individuals picked by the state. With the help of FIFA and the government of Ghana, he championed an elective GFA appointment of two-terms comprising eight years.
Also, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe asserted extending the current tenure would only lead to wanton corruption.
“Positions corrupt people in this country, and when you extend the term, the corruption becomes even worse,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said.
“I was the architect of the two-term limit for the FA presidency, and I will not allow anyone to topple the statute to serve their personal agenda,” he vowed.
“If they try to change the tenure, I’ll fight it with all my strength. It was my recommendation that compelled the FA to adopt this policy.”
There is an ongoing campaign to review the GFA Statutes and extend the two-term presidency to three, each spanning four years.
