Health Minister urges Hospitals to allocate 10% of IGF for maintenance
The Ministry of Health has instructed all health agencies and teaching hospitals to set aside a minimum of 10 percent of their Internally Generated Funds for maintenance works and the replacement of worn-out equipment.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, March 9, 2026, the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, explained that the directive is intended to tackle longstanding maintenance challenges in public health facilities and improve the overall quality of care.
He disclosed that the Ministry has put in place a comprehensive Health Infrastructure Strategic Plan, alongside the Ghana Health Infrastructure Strategy spanning 2020 to 2029, to guide expansion, refurbishment and upgrading of health facilities, depending on available funding.
The Minister further revealed that a nationwide equipment replacement initiative is in progress to phase out outdated and faulty medical tools. As part of this exercise, dialysis machines have been identified as a top priority and are currently at the procurement stage to widen access to dialysis treatment and enhance the management of kidney-related conditions.
He stressed that efforts are underway to instill a stronger maintenance culture across health institutions, while urgent shortfalls in critical, life-saving equipment are being addressed through targeted interventions.
The new measure, he noted, is expected to keep health facilities operational, properly equipped and better positioned to meet the needs of patients.
