International Day of the Girl Child: GES distributes over 6 million sanitary pads to school girls nationwide

Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the distribution of 6,607,095 sanitary pads to school girls across all 16 regions of the country.
This was "part of efforts to promote the welfare and dignity of girls," GES said in a statement.
"This initiative is aimed at addressing menstrual hygiene challenges and ensuring that no girl misses school during her menstrual period," the service explained further.
GES underlined, "This intervention is in fulfilment of the Government of Ghana's promise to provide free sanitary pads to all school girls, from basic to second cycle, on a monthly basis throughout their life in school.
"It reflects the government's commitment to improving menstrual hygiene, promoting gender equality in education, and safeguarding the health and confidence of adolescent girls."
GES, in its statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, assured all school girls of its "continuous support," reiterating its "dedication to building an education system that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of every learner".
The service encouraged girls to "stay focused on their studies", taking "full advantage of the opportunities provided to them".
Additionally, GES thanked the Haruna Iddrisu-led Ministry of Education for "the tireless efforts in operationalising this important life-changing initiative for school girls across the country".
Today, Saturday, October 11, 2025, marks the International Day of the Girl Child.
"The day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to support the growth, education, and empowerment of every girl in Ghana and beyond," GES highlighted.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, themed: "The Giri I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis".
