Accra Mayor unveils welfare fund for Assembly Members

The Mayor of Accra, Mr. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting the welfare of Assembly Members during times of illness and personal hardship.
The plan includes the creation of a dedicated account to provide financial assistance to members facing health or emergency challenges.
The announcement was made on Thursday during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the 9th Assembly, held at the Omanye Aba Hall of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Mayor Allotey emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader vision to foster unity and promote a culture of compassion and solidarity within the Assembly.
“You can’t come and serve the Assembly, and later, when you’re sick, then we leave you.
I’m bringing a fund that will cater for Assembly Members,” he stated.
“Every month, we will deposit some money there, so if an Assembly Member is not feeling well or is in trouble, we can take money from the fund to support them.”
The proposed fund, which will be contributed to monthly, seeks to ensure that members who dedicate themselves to public service through the AMA are not left unsupported during vulnerable moments.
The Mayor’s announcement was welcomed with optimism by members of the Assembly, who lauded the move as timely and considerate.
The fund is expected to be rolled out in the coming months, with clear guidelines for contributions and disbursement.
