Fire destroys ballot boxes at Kwashieman cluster of schools
A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools has raised concerns, as the facility was being used to store ballot boxes from the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
The blaze, which started around 1:40 a.m., is reported to have originated in the school’s library, where the election materials were kept.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service worked for over two hours to bring the fire under control, though it has not been completely extinguished.
Alex King Nartey, the Public Relations Officer of the Fire Service, stated that the cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigations are underway to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
Adding to the mystery, burned ballot papers were discovered outside the school premises after the fire.
This has heightened suspicions and fueled speculation about the potential motives behind the blaze.
Firefighters, led by the operations commander, managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the school.
Adjoining buildings were successfully salvaged, limiting the damage to the affected area.
Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage to the election materials stored in the library.
They are also working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fire and the subsequent discovery of the burned ballot papers.
The incident has raised alarm, given the sensitive nature of the materials involved and its potential implications for the ongoing electoral process.
