Gov't condemns attempted arrest of JoyNews reporter, orders immediate investigation

The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of a JoyNews reporter and the assault of an eyewitness by a soldier at a demolition site, describing the incident as completely unacceptable under the John Mahama administration.
In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to press freedom and the safety of all journalists in the country.
“A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse,” the statement emphasised.
President John Dramani Mahama, through the communication, directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the soldier involved faces immediate disciplinary action.
“The appropriate punishment must be imposed without delay.
Disciplinary and punitive measures are necessary to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences,” the statement added.
The government also reiterated its broader commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of all Ghanaians, stressing that such abuses of power have no place in a democratic society.
