Residents of Dekpor-Horme appeal for urgent development
Residents of Dekpor-Horme in Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region have made a passionate appeal to government and local authorities to address critical developmental challenges confronting the community.
The concerns were raised by the youth leadership of the community, highlighting pressing needs affecting livelihoods and wellbeing.
Speaking on behalf of the chiefs and people, Chairman of the Dekpor-Horme Youth Association, Douglas Senyaglo, expressed appreciation to Member of Parliament (MP) Eric Edem Agbana for ongoing support to the community. He acknowledged past interventions but emphasised that more could be done to improve living conditions in the area.
A major concern raised was the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water. According to the residents, many households depend on the Kplikpa dam as their primary source of water for drinking and domestic use, exposing them to waterborne diseases such as typhoid and malaria. They appealed for the completion of an ongoing borehole project and the provision of additional potable water systems.
The issue of poor drainage infrastructure was also highlighted as a significant challenge. Community members noted that heavy rains often result in severe erosion, creating deep gullies that damage homes and make movement within the area dangerous. They called for the construction of proper drainage systems to safeguard lives and property.
Residents further lamented the lack of electricity in parts of the community, particularly in Quarters B of the resettlement area. They explained that the absence of power has negatively impacted businesses, disrupted education, and slowed development.
An urgent appeal was made for electricity extension to the affected areas.
The deplorable state of roads in Dekpor-Horme was another key issue raised during the durbar. The stretch from Dekpor Basic School through the Market Square to the Chinese Dam Roundabout becomes nearly impassable during the rainy season, hindering transportation and economic activities. The community is, therefore, calling for immediate rehabilitation or tarring of the road.
They further appealed for the creation of a new voting centre within Dekpor-Horme. They noted that long distances to existing polling stations discourage voter participation, particularly among the elderly, thereby denying many their right to vote.
The community leaders called for the revival of a once-thriving fish pond project that previously provided employment opportunities for the youth. They believe restoring the facility will boost local economic activity and reduce unemployment.
While making these appeals, the residents reaffirmed their commitment to supporting development efforts through communal labour and cooperation, expressing optimism for a brighter future with timely intervention from authorities.
