Two killed in renewed Bawku violence amid rising tensions
Two people have been killed in separate attacks by unidentified gunmen in Bawku, deepening the unrest in the conflict-stricken town.
The incidents occurred in Gozesi and Daduri, both suburbs of Bawku, where ongoing tensions have recently escalated into violence.
One of the victims, identified as Moro Aziz, a mentally unstable man from Gozesi, was reportedly killed near the Bawku cemetery.
Details surrounding his death remain unclear, but his killing highlights the indiscriminate nature of the violence.
The second victim, Kasim, was fatally attacked in Daduri while attempting to relocate within the volatile area.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers targeted him during his movements.
These killings bring the death toll in Bawku to 35 since hostilities reignited in late October 2024.
The conflict, which began in November 2021 over the installation of a rival chief, had subsided temporarily in 2023 but flared up again on October 25, 2024.
The recent violence was reportedly triggered by the return of the rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, installed by the Nayir, reigniting longstanding disputes in the area.
Despite a dawn-to-dusk curfew imposed by authorities to contain the violence, the situation in Bawku remains tense and unpredictable.
Security forces are on high alert, but achieving lasting peace in the town remains a significant challenge.
The renewed violence underscores the complexity of the conflict, as residents continue to grapple with the devastating toll on lives and livelihoods.
