W/R: Joint security task force destroys 100 Changfang machines in major anti-galamsey raid
A coordinated security operation at Dominase, near the Ankobra River, has led to the destruction of a significant number of equipment used for illegal mining, commonly known as 'galamsey'.
The successful raid was conducted on Friday by a joint team comprising personnel from the Nzema East Blue Water Guards, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Immigration Service supervised by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Secretariat(NAiMOS).
According to officials, the operation resulted in the burning of one hundred (100) changfang machines and fifty (50) blankets believed to have been used by illegal miners at the site.
An additional five (5) blankets were seized as evidence.
Furthermore, the task force apprehended two individuals at the scene.
They are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
A spokesperson for the Blue Water Guards commended the inter-agency collaboration, stating that the operation underscores a continued commitment to protecting the Ankobra River and other water bodies from the destructive effects of illegal mining.
"The destruction of these changfangs is a significant blow to the galamsey operators in this enclave," the spokesperson said.
"We will sustain these joint efforts to safeguard our environment for future generations."
This operation is part of the government's renewed efforts to combat the galamsey menace, which poses a severe threat to Ghana's forest reserves and water resources.
