Health Minister pledges completion of La General Hospital within two years
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has visited the construction site of the La General Hospital in the Greater Accra Region to assess progress on the long-delayed project, which has faced several setbacks over the years.
The hospital, estimated to cost 50 million euros, has experienced funding challenges and multiple contractual arrangements since its inception.
According to the Minister, the project currently has no dedicated funding source, meaning progress depends on allocations made through the national budget.
Mr. Akandoh revealed that the 2025 national budget earmarked GH₵130 million for the project, with 7 million euros already disbursed to the contractor.
This leaves an outstanding balance of 43 million euros yet to be covered.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s determination to see the project through to completion, noting that additional budgetary allocations will be made to sustain construction work.
“If all goes according to plan, the hospital should be completed within the next two years,” he assured.
Mr. Akandoh also emphasised that the government would not abandon the site, promising close collaboration with the contractor to ensure that the facility, once completed, will be fully equipped to deliver quality healthcare services to residents of La and the surrounding communities.
During the inspection tour, the Minister interacted with both the contractor and construction workers, acknowledging the difficulties they face and pledging government support to address them.
He further instructed his technical team to work closely with the contractor to expedite progress and maintain quality standards.
The La General Hospital project is among the government’s key health infrastructure priorities aimed at strengthening Ghana’s healthcare delivery system and expanding access to essential medical services.
