#2024Polls: Had NPP won 'there'd have been fire and blood everywhere' – NAPO observes
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the Energy Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, has bemoaned the incumbent's defeat at the polls.
"It's painful," he said.
However, he expressed confidence in God's wisdom, noting the defeat and concession of the NPP had greatly helped safeguard the peace and stability of Ghana.
"If God had given us victory, we could not have met like this. There’d be fire and blood and other things everywhere. This is a good lesson. God knew what was best. He doesn't act impulsively," NAPO said.
Speaking in the midst of government officials and party executives, he underlined the NPP's commitment to peace and order.
"If you have properties in a country, you do not wish for the country to burn to ashes," he echoed a saying, lamenting, however: "The opposition wishes to see fire."
Ghana went to the polls on Saturday, December 7, 2024, where it voted into power the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President John Dramani Mahama.
On Sunday morning, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, conceded defeat and congratulated Mr Mahama.
On Monday, the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Chairperson Jean Mensa declared Mahama president-elect, with more than six million votes. Though she said there were figures from 9 constituencies yet to be collated, she noted they would make no difference in the incumbent catching up with and overtaking the NDC.
For NAPO, the defeat was a great lesson to be taken in good faith, and, also, in preparation for the party's anticipated return to power.
"You cannot make jewelry from gold without passing it through fire. God has a way of taking everyone through fire so that when you are given power, you will mindfully handle it and honour God and your mandate," he said.
"We’ve not gotten what we desired and you never give up till you find what is yours but missing," he added.
