Asiedu Nketia warns NDC presidential hopefuls to focus on governance, not 2028 ambitions

The National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a stern warning to party members eyeing the 2028 presidential slot, urging them to shelve their ambitions and focus on governance.
Speaking during an interview on the Citizen’s Show with Kwabena Bobie Ansah on Accra 100.5 FM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Mr. Nketia cautioned that premature jostling for leadership positions could derail the party’s focus and undermine the gains expected under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
“We are a party in government, and we must focus on delivering on the massive mandate Ghanaians gave us during the December 2024 elections,” he stated.
“Any distraction from that mission will hurt not just our performance but also our chances in 2028.
Our faith is firmly linked to John Mahama’s success – Asiedu Nketia tell party leaders”
Mr. Nketia emphasised that internal competition for the flagbearer position is unnecessary at this stage and warned it could derail the NDC’s developmental agenda.
“The time will come when the party will open nominations and allow for leadership contests,” he said.
“But for now, we have work to do.
Let’s put our shoulders to the wheel and deliver for the Ghanaian people.”
He stressed that the NDC's priority must be to restore the country after what he described as the “rot” left behind by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
“If the party delivers, choosing a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections will be a smooth and easy process,” he added.
“But the essence of becoming a flagbearer means little if the party fails in government.”
Asiedu Nketia urged all party faithful to direct their energies towards fulfilling the party’s promises, asserting that once the government performs creditably, discussions about succession will naturally take shape without strife in the next few years to come.
