Chairman Wontumi calls for party unity ahead internal elections
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the National Chairman position of the opposition New Patriotic Party ahead of the party’s upcoming internal elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 1, 2026, Chairman Wontumi said his decision to seek the position is rooted in his longstanding commitment to the unity and progress of the party.
According to him, throughout his political career, he has consistently prioritised the interests of the NPP above personal ambitions.
“I have always put the interests of the NPP first.
When it became clear that the majority of party members wanted Nana Akufo-Addo to lead, I set aside personal preference, supported him wholeheartedly, and worked for the unity and success of the party,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi, who currently serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, is widely regarded as one of the party’s influential grassroots figures, particularly within the Ashanti Region, considered the party’s stronghold.
His declaration signals the beginning of what is expected to be a keenly contested race for the position of National Chairman as the NPP prepares to reorganise following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
The slogan accompanying his announcement, “Vote Bernard Antwi Boasiako for National Chairman,” forms part of his campaign message to delegates and party supporters across the country.
The NPP is expected to outline timelines and guidelines for its internal elections in the coming months as the party seeks to reposition itself ahead of the 2028 general elections
