A delegation from the Ministry of Defence, led by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has briefed the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs and National Security on steps being taken to strengthen national security following the recent terrorist attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso.

The attack, which occurred in Burkina Faso, claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians and left three others injured, sparking concern over the safety of traders operating across the northern border.

Addressing the Committee, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi disclosed that two Forward Operating Bases located in Jirapa and Hamile are ready and will soon become fully operational to enhance security presence along Ghana’s northern frontier.

He added that surveillance along key border corridors has been intensified to deter and prevent future attacks.

The Deputy Minister further revealed that the government has approved the deployment of Defence Attachés to six high-risk countries—Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Israel, Iran and Libya—to strengthen protection for Ghanaians living and working abroad.

He noted that Ghana is also collaborating with Burkinabe authorities through targeted training initiatives aimed at improving escort duties and strengthening security coordination.

As part of broader reforms, selected security personnel will undergo specialised academic and intelligence-based training at dedicated centres, with a focus on escort operations and strategic response capabilities.

Mr Brogya Genfi stressed that these measures form part of a comprehensive strategy to safeguard Ghanaian citizens both within the country and beyond its borders.
