Sports Minister confident in Black Stars' World Cup readiness; predicts squad cuts from goalkeeping unit
Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed full confidence in the Black Stars' readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while confirming that two players will be cut from the provisional squad today.
Head Coach Carlos Queiroz initially named a 28-man provisional roster, which features five goalkeepers: Benjamin Asare, Solomon Agbasi, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Joseph Annag, and Paul Reverson.
The final 26-man squad must be submitted today, Monday, June 1, 2026, ahead of the team's friendly against Wales tomorrow at the Cardiff City Stadium.
"We are ready on all fronts for the World Cup," Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, stated in an interview with TV3.
"The coach will have to drop two players from the 28 preliminary players he has called up."
The Sports Minister indicated that the technical team is expected to trim the squad by reducing its numbers in goal. "The cut of the Black Stars squad from 28 to 26 is likely to come from the goalkeeping unit. They will surely take a cut," he added.
Following the June 2 match against Wales, Ghana will continue its pre-tournament schedule with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10.
Making their fifth appearance at the tournament, the Black Stars are drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
Ghana opens its campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, followed by England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and a final group fixture against Croatia on June 27.
The team aims to advance past the group stage for the first time since their quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
