The Ga Traditional Council has raised objections to the planned celebration of the 2025 Igbo New Yam Festival in Accra, warning that the event could disrupt peace and security within the Ga State.

In a letter signed by the Council’s Registrar, Evelyn Amewotse, the leadership of the Ga State expressed concern over an invitation and flyer circulating on social media announcing the festival.

The event, organised by Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Hienetu under the banner of “2025 Ibo Day in Ghana – New Yam Festival,” is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park.

The Council recalled an earlier press release issued on July 9, 2025, in which Eze Hienetu was cautioned against holding cultural and traditional festivities that sought to introduce Igbo traditions into the Ga State.

According to the Council, despite the caution, the proposed celebration appears to disregard its directive, prompting fears of possible tension if the event goes ahead.

“HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has directed me to write to inform you and also seek your assistance by putting the above programme to a halt as soon as possible,” the Registrar stated in the letter.

The Ga Traditional Council has therefore appealed to relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that the event is halted in order to maintain peace and security in the Ga State.
