A violent clash between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the distribution of 2,000 bags of fertiliser at Akumadan in the Offinso North Municipality of the Ashanti Region has tragically resulted in the deaths of three individuals.

The incident occurred on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Nkramom, a community within Akumadan.

Eyewitnesses report that tensions erupted when a group of young men identified as NDC supporters demanded the keys to a cocoa weighing centre and the storage facility housing the fertiliser.

After the caretaker of the facility, Mr. Kwaku Yeboah, refused to hand over the keys, the group allegedly forced their way into the storage room.

Upon receiving a tip-off, a group of NPP supporters in the area mobilised and confronted the NDC group, resulting in violent clashes.

The altercation escalated into serious physical confrontations, leading to the tragic loss of lives.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Yeboah and his wife, Akua Afriyie, recounted their terrifying experience during the incident and described how the violence unfolded.

The NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate for Offinso North, Caesar Ofosu Acheampong, condemned the incident and called for calm among his party members.

This comes in the wake of similar unrest at the constituency collation centre on Sunday, December 8, 2024, where agitated NDC supporters reportedly stormed the district police headquarters in protest.

Addressing supporters after the announcement of the parliamentary election results, Mr. Acheampong expressed disappointment over the loss of the NDC seat to Fred Kyei Asamoah, the Director-General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET).

He urged party members to take responsibility for the electoral defeat, which he attributed to a "skirt-and-blouse" voting pattern that split support between NDC and NPP candidates.

Mr. Acheampong appealed for calm and unity, emphasising the need to avoid further violence.

“Let us reflect on the choices we made and resolve to rebuild our party stronger for the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, local authorities have launched an investigation into the fertiliser dispute and the ensuing violence. Security has been Beefed in the area to prevent further clashes as tensions remain high in the aftermath of the incident.
