June 29 downpour among highest daily rainfall recorded since 1995 – Interior Minister
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed that the heavy rainfall that battered parts of the country on Monday, June 29, ranks as the fourth-highest single-day rainfall event recorded in Ghana since 1995.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, the Minister said figures from the Ghana Meteorological Agency showed that 169.2 millimetres of rain fell within 24 hours, resulting in widespread flooding across the Greater Accra Region.
According to Mr. Muntaka, government received an early warning from the Ghana Meteorological Agency around midnight that rainfall was expected to intensify. However, he said forecasters were unable to predict the unprecedented volume of rain that eventually fell.
He noted that while weather experts anticipated heavier-than-normal rainfall, the magnitude of the downpour exceeded expectations and became one of the most significant rainfall events recorded in the country's recent history.
The Interior Minister further revealed that June 2026 has become the wettest June on record, with a cumulative rainfall of 593.2 millimetres. He said this exceeds the previous record of 420.6 millimetres set in 2002 and 380.3 millimetres recorded in 2015.
Mr. Muntaka acknowledged that poor sanitation practices, including indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and construction on waterways, contributed to the severity of the flooding. However, he maintained that the exceptional amount of rainfall would have placed enormous pressure on drainage systems even under improved environmental conditions.
He also updated Parliament on the humanitarian impact of the disaster, revealing that more than 7,700 households were affected, while 25 communities across 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) experienced varying degrees of destruction.
The Minister said the floods displaced tens of thousands of residents, left seven people missing, and claimed the lives of 12 people, as emergency response agencies continue rescue, recovery and assessment efforts in the affected areas.
